The Education & Research Institute will award three scholarships:

1 award of $2,500 for a student attending University of Idaho

1 award of $2,500 for a student attending Oregon State University

1 award of $2,500 for a student attending Washington State University



Open to students pursuing a 4-year degree or graduate degree in an academic discipline and a strong interest and intent to work in the Northwest food processing industry.  Examples include, but are not limited to agricultural sciences, food science and technology, nutrition and dietary science, production, operations management, engineering, horticulture, agriculture and resources economics, business management, accounting, environmental sciences.  Students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Employees and families of Food Northwest member companies are encouraged to apply for these scholarships.  ERI Board of Directors, Officers, and their family members are not eligible for these scholarships.

How to Apply

Submit a completed and signed scholarship APPLICATION by August 15, 2019, including the following:

  • Proof of enrollment in an accredited institution.  Visit the Registrar’s office for this form.  Some schools may have web-based verification that can be printed.
  • Official transcript obtained from your college or school.  High school seniors submit an official high school transcript.
  • Two letters of recommendation signed within last 12 months by a non-family member.

Scholarship Selection Criteria

The Board of Directors of the Food Northwest Education and Research Institute will select the scholarship recipients based on the following criteria:

Demonstrated direction and commitment to a career in the food processing industry, e.g., internship or work experience in food processing or related fields


Leadership and involvement in related extra-curricular activities and programs


Grade point average  (Minimum 2.5 GPA)


Financial need



Selection Process

  1. Education & Research Institute (ERI) staff will review the applications and score each applicant against the objective selection criteria.
  1. The ERI Scholarship Task Force will meet with staff and review, discuss and select candidates to recommend to the ERI Board for scholarship awards.
  1. The ERI Board will make a final decision on scholarship awards.  Applicants will be notified of their status by August 30, 2019. 

Attendance at 2020 Food & Beverage World Conference and Expo

Scholarship winners will be invited to attend the premier food industry conference and expo the 2020 Food & Beverage World.  Travel, hotel and expenses will be covered.  Students will attend the Sunday night Food Northwest Chair’s Reception and the Monday conference and trade show.  There will be opportunities to learn about the industry and to network and meet important contacts in the industry.
