Membership on the Committee is open to all food manufacturer members. Contact Pam Barrow if you are interested in joining. The Committee develops and recommends association policies, positions, priorities, and activities related to energy efficiency, energy management, supply and reliability, and emerging technologies. It also offers opportunities to network with peers, share information, and discover resources and solutions. The Committee’s focus is guided by its Program Priorities and Decarbonization Roadmap.

Energy Program and Policies

Food Northwest recognizes the importance of protecting and improving the environment, as well as reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2009, Food Northwest became the first industry group in the country to set a goal of increasing energy efficiency strategies to reduce member-wide energy intensity by 25% within 10 years. Having achieved this goal, we are now focused on decarbonizing food processing alongside energy efficiency.

Current issues and activities include:

  • Promote the needs and interests of food processors to regulators, legislators, utilities, and other organizations.
  • Decarbonization technologies – availability and feasibility
  • Energy supply, infrastructure, costs, and reliability issues
  • Funding and assistance opportunities to support decarbonization, energy efficiency, and competitiveness
  • Participate in Lawrence Berkley National Lab’s Food & Beverage Operational Optimization and Deployment Center, which will identify technologies, processes, and infrastructure to strengthen productivity, competitiveness, and affordability.

Food Northwest Carbon Task Force

Membership is open to all food manufacturer members subject to carbon regulations or with an interest in carbon issues.  The committee reviews and analyzes proposed carbon-reduction policies, regulations, and legislation, and develops and advocates positions before regulators and legislators.

Food Northwest is committed to reducing carbon emissions in the food processing sector. There must be protections and measures that allow companies to maintain competitiveness and avoid economic and greenhouse gas emissions leakage.

 Current focus is on:

  • Oregon Climate Protection Program 2026 EITE (emissions-intensive, trade-exposed) entities rulemaking.  Food Northwest, J.R. Simplot, and Lamb Weston serve on the rulemaking advisory committee.
  • Washington Climate Commitment Act 2026 Report to the Legislature on EITE Allowances.
