UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS

Every year since its 75th anniversary in 1989, Food Northwest and its Education and Research Institute have awarded scholarships to deserving students in the states of Idaho, Oregon and Washington.  The purpose of these scholarships is to encourage students to pursue a career in the food industry and to encourage and support industry employees to further their education.

The Education & Research Institute will award three scholarships:

1 award of $2,500 for a student attending University of Idaho

1 award of $2,500 for a student attending Oregon State University

1 award of $2,500 for a student attending Washington State University

Eligibility

Open to students pursuing a 4-year degree or graduate degree in an academic discipline and a strong interest and intent to work in the Northwest food processing industry.  Examples include, but are not limited to agricultural sciences, food science and technology, nutrition and dietary science, production, operations management, engineering, horticulture, agriculture and resources economics, business management, accounting, environmental sciences.  Students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Must be attending Oregon State University, University of Idaho and/or Washington State University.

Employees and families of Food Northwest member companies are encouraged to apply for these scholarships.  ERI Board of Directors, Officers, and their family members are not eligible for these scholarships.

Selection Criteria

The Board of Directors of the Food Northwest Education and Research Institute will select the scholarship recipients based on the following criteria:

Commitment to a career in the food processing industry, e.g., internship or work experience in food processing or related fields

Leadership and involvement in related extra-curricular activities and programs

25%

Grade point average  (Minimum 2.5 GPA)

20%

Financial need

20%

Submit a completed and signed Application by June 30, 2023 to [email protected]

Application materials will include the following:

  1. A completed Application with your signature on page 4.
  2. Official transcript obtained from your college or school.  High school seniors submit an official high school transcript.
  3. Proof of enrollment in the University of Idaho, Oregon State University or Washington State University.  Visit the Registrar’s office for this form or if available print web-based verification.
  4. A letter of recommendation signed within the past 12 months by a non-family member or student peer.
  5. Career Plans (see page 4 of the Application for details).

Awards

  • Applicants will be notified of their status in July 31, 2023Scholarship awards will be paid directly to the university.
  • Scholarship recipients will be recognized on Food Northwest’s web site and in Food Northwest publications.
  • Attendance at Food Northwest Process & Packaging Expo 2024 (April 9 - 11, 2024 in Portland, OR) Travel, hotel and expenses will be covered.  There will be opportunities to learn about the industry and to meet important contacts.
